9A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
Opportunity
The Who: UF Students
The What: Accessibility to a quiet study room in a library
The Why: Never available when needed—especially when exam season starts
Interviews
#1: Ryan B
Ryan said every time he goes to the library when he needs to study for an exam. He either has to wait a few hours for an available room or he just leaves the library because he cannot get anything done. He said he just comes back later to study when the library clears up, but he loses hours of study time because of the lack of study rooms available.
#2: Cameron B
Cameron said her roommates are really obnoxious and loud every time she tries to study in her room, so she relies on the library to study, but during exam time, she only finds it difficult to find a study room in any of the libraries.
#3: Michael L
Michael said he agrees that this is an issue, so he only uses the library when it starts to clear out. The only time that the library clears out is around 2 in the morning, which is ridiculous because no one wants to start studying that early in the morning or late at night.
#4: Sean I
Sean said he does not really care where he studies. As long as he has a desk big enough to fit his laptop and notebook, he said he would be fine. He said he doesn't mind doing his work at the library, but he said it isn't necessary.
#5: Kamy G
Kamy said he prefers to study in his dorm with headphones on because his desk is always available and if he really needs silence, then he politely asks his roommate to leave. He says his roommate usually doesn't have a problem leaving while he's studying in the room.
| Inside | Outside |
| Who is in: Students that need isolation and silence to study | Who is not: Students who can study around other people |
| What the need is: A quiet, isolated room to study in the library | What the need is not: They don't need the library to study |
| Why the need exists: Too many students and not enough rooms in the libraries | Alternative Explanations: Students who don't need the library just study in their rooms/anywhere comfortable |
Conclusion
I still think that the opportunity exists and that we either need more study rooms or bigger libraries. On the other hand, you could look at this as an opportunity to innovate and we could have dorms that could be equipped with personal study cubbies that are soundproof. (Future Solution)
