27A - Reading Reflection No.3
Book: Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme or argument of the book was an explanation that there are 2 routes of persuasion based on 2 basic mindsets. One is fast(intuitive thinking) and one is slow(rational thinking).
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
In my opinion, the book connects with and enhances what I learned in ENT3003 about how to
approach the customer and persuade them to buy your product. The book focuses on establishing the
difference between intuitive and rational thinking because both are different mindsets that require
different approaches when trying to persuade.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
Based on the book I read, my exercise would involve my participants figuring out whether they are an
intuitive thinker, who is fast, automatic and emotional or a rational thinker, who is fast, deliberate and
systematic through a set of pitches designed for either intuitive or rational thinkers. Based on how the
class responded and analyzed to each pitch would determine whether they sided more with the rational
thinkers pitch or an intuitive thinkers pitch.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
I was most surprised by the idea that there are 2 main methods to persuade an individual, which
is based on the concept that there are only 2 basic mindsets or modes of thinking. I think if you
know everyone's mode of thinking in a business environment, then you will be able to properly
persuade them using the correct system of persuasion that is tailored to their mode of thinking.
Hey Eli! I think you have a great post and chose a very interesting book to read. I think it is really cool how different strategies to persuade someone can be used depending on the person's type of thinking process. This book is very applicable to this class because it helps entrepreneurs determine how they will try to persuade potential customers. I love your in class activity and would love to find out what type of thinker I am. I also find it surprising that there are only two main mindsets, but do think it would be useful for a business to categorize people this way.
ReplyDeleteEli, I thought you did a great job talking about this book. It's funny to me because I have heard of this book in many instances and have heard great things about it. Unfortunately I have not had the opportunity to read it yet, however after reading your post, it definitely sparks my interest. It is definitely interesting how the thinking process effects us and I'm intrigued to learn more about myself and my thinking process. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Eli! You did a great job with summarizing this specific reading and answering the questions! I really like the assignment that you created for the class in the fact that it helps people realize where they fall on the spectrum! I think this would be very beneficial for everyone that completes this assignment and would help them be successful in their future business and career ventures!
