13A - Reading Reflection No.1

1. Entrepreneur: The Wright Brothers
  • What surprised you the most?
I was most surprised about how long it took the Wright Brothers to pursue developing
the airplane or the first functioning flying machine.

  • What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?
I admire the creativity and ingenuity that the Wright Brothers possessed. Those traits led them to create the first functioning flying machine. There innovation inspired our modern day transporting machines, which is astonishing and it changed our outlook on transportation around the world forever.
I also admired how the Wright Brothers managed to build this feat of aviation without having any formal training as engineers or a high school diploma.

  • What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?
The thing I least admired about my entrepreneurs was that they put away the Wright Flyer because they said it was beyond repair. I think they gave up on the Wright Flyer and that's why they claimed it unfixable.

  • Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?
One of the Wright Brothers, Wilbur, intended on attending a university but he had a horrible accident and was unable to start his time at the university. Instead of crawling into a corner and accepting his loss, Wilbur used the time he was healing to think of innovative ideas to kickstart the first functioning flying machine.

2. What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
The competentencies I noticed that the Wright Brothers exhibited were that were competent managers because they successfully ran a printing shop that published a newspaper and they also successfully managed and operated a bike shop.

3. Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
I thought reading about the brothers past ventures was confusing because there former ventures were just a waste of time in my opinion, but if they managed to still conjore up the first functioning flying machine they must have been doing something right, so I am confused how they still managed to accomplish all their goals after wasting all that time.

4. If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
How was an idea of this magnitude conjured?
Did it just come pop into his head while he was showering
or
Did he spend years thinking about how it would work?

5. For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?

I think the entrepreneur’s opinion on hard work was that of acceptance. In order to get
anywhere in life, you have to work for it. I agree with their outlook on hardwork and I
work hard to achieve the goals I set for myself.

  3. Hey Eli, I did not read this book, but I think your post does a great job of describing it and the Wright brothers. I think it is really interesting that they ran so many businesses and managed them efficiently. I also did not know about Wilbur and how he had to give up university due to a horrible accident. Despite the fact that they gave up on the Wright Flyer, I think these brothers clearly believed in hard work and were very innovative. Overall, I think you did a great job with this post and I certainly learned a great deal from it. Also, I really like how you organized your post.

  4. Eli, I didn't read this book, but I thought you provided a lot of great information and it seems this book was quite enjoyable. I have always enjoyed the Wright Brothers and everything they contributed to society during their lifetime. One thing I must say I did not know about the Wright Brothers is that they did not have a high school diploma. It is so interesting to see how innovative and imaginative people were before such emphasis on formal education. Well done!
