7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

Opportunity: Apple is intentionally slowing down their older iPhone’s processing speeds, so their
consumers/customers have to upgrade to their next product.


The who: Apple Inc.
The what: They are intentionally slowing down their older iPhones processing speeds
The why: So consumers have to upgrade to their next iPhone


Hypothesis


Testing the Who: I believe there are others that have the same problem/need. I would say it is safe
to assume that most iPhone users with outdated iPhones experience some variance of processing
speed issues.


Testing the What:
Are all iPhones slow or just the older versions?
Is apple bad or do all companies do this and just haven’t been caught?


Testing the Why:
Why do you still have an older iPhone if this is an issue?
Why do you still stay with Apple?


Interviews:


#1 - Michael P.
Michael is an owner of the iPhone 6 Plus. He has had the phone for two years now and said it was
perfectly fine during the first year of use. He said around the middle of the second year, he began
to experience some issues with the phone's connection. Little did he know it was Apple who was
slowing down his iPhone’s speed. I imparted this information to him and he was surprised at the
fact that Apple intentionally slows down their iPhone’s processing speed. He originally thought
that his phone was slow because of his carrier network, but now he thinks otherwise.


#2 - David S.
David is an owner of the iPhone X. He is more than satisfied with the phone at the moment.
He got the phone when it came out in September, so he has had the phone for about 5 months
and has not experienced any issues in relation to its processing speeds.

#3 - Tanguy E.
Tanguy is an owner of the iPhone 5. Tanguy says “the phone gets the job done”, but he
really only uses his phone to make calls and text. He said he stopped using the safari app
and other games on his phone because it would just lag and sometimes it would just force
shut the app while it was loading. Overall, Tanguy is not satisfied with the phone, but he does
not want to upgrade his phone because he thinks it is a waste of money to upgrade your phone
everytime a new one comes out. He says he is waiting for an affordable new iPhone with new
features like the X and Galaxy phones.


#4 - Elijah S.
Elijah is an owner of the iPhone 7. He has had the phone for about an year and has dropped
it an estimated total of 5 times. Aside from those 5 drops, he said he updated his phone and that
slowed his phone down even more than the 5 drops. The drops barely caused any software related
damage; they appeared to only damage the exterior shell of the phone. He expressed his
frustration with Apple and said he might switch over to Galaxy if Apple does not step it up.


#5 - Blake M.
Blake is an owner of the iPhone 5. Similar to Tanguy, but his phone has been dropped a
considerable amount of times because the screen is shattered in multiple spots. His phone is
damaged internally and externally. He told me that even before he shattered the screen, his
phone was already really slow.


After all the interviews, I realized that other iPhone users are experiencing the same issues as
me with their iPhones. I now know that my phone is not the only one that experiences any
issues with its processing speeds.

  1. Eli, heck of a job here. I had a tough time thinking of an opportunity and if I could go back and change it, I would choose this. I will definitely be following your next blog posts in relation to this opportunity. I have an iPhone as well as the majority of people I know. This is an issue I have heard about and seem to have experienced myself. It is interesting to know what Apple may be doing to get consumers to purchase the newest iPhone. Great job!

  2. Hey Elli! You did a great job with this post. The opportunity you picked is a very relatable one that plagues many people so I think you would be able to exploit it very easily. I love how in depth your interviews are and the fact that you organized your post so well. The only advice I would give is to maybe interview people with even older phones or with pluses to see if there is a difference.
