Forming An Opportunity Belief
I believe that there is an opportunity that exists in a bug in my daily life. The bug mentioned refers to the incessant dog feces that covers the dog park located on the bottom floor of the Standard and the inside of the Standard. I believe there is an opportunity in the filth that is known the dog park and the Standard as a whole.
As a resident of the Standard, I expect the dog feces in the dog park to be cleaned because it is currently filthy. Aside from the dog park, the trash littered inside the hallways at the Standard needs to be cleaned. The residents need the dog park clean so they can go inside with their dogs without stepping on another dog’s feces. The needs of many residents at the Standard are not met because they too wish to live in a sanitary building and that is not currently the situation at hand. This issue came forth this year right after the Standard's residents moved in. Standard residents are complaining to management on a daily basis about the dog parks cleanliness issue. This is the resident’s attempt at meeting their needs. At this point, I am about 75% sure this opportunity exists at the Standard.
Standard Resident 1 (Michael):
According to Michael, a resident at the Standard, the dog park is filthy and the hallways are trashed everytime he walks by it. He said he becomes aware of the need when he needs to leave the building because he has to walk past the dirty hallways and filthy dog park. His need for a clean dog park and hallway is consistent because he lives in the building and will be walking past both the dog park and the hallways on a daily basis. This has been an issue for him since he has moved in. He said that sends formal complaints to management in hope for a change.
I learned that my expectations for a clean building are mutually agreed upon by other residents at the Standard. There was nothing surprising about what I learned except how many people agree with me.
Standard Resident 2 (David):
According to David, another resident at the Standard, his floor was covered in Mcdonald’s wrappers and dogshit a few weeks back and that trash and dog feces stayed there for weeks until someone picked it up or called someone to pick it up. He became aware of this issue soon after he moved into the Standard. He doesn’t take his dog to the dog park anymore. He said he walks him around the building.
I learned that my expectations for a clean building are still mutually agreed upon by other residents in the Standard. I was surprised when he told me he stopped taking his dog to the dog park because of how dirty the dog park is.
Standard Resident 3 (Sarah)(My Neighbor):
According to Sarah, another resident at the Standard, there was dog feces in front of her door for a week. The worst part is that the dog feces was from 3 different dogs on 3 different days. She told me she called to complain about the feces and it was cleaned, but then the other 2 dogs came later that week and left the other 2 shits in front of her door.
I learned that my expectations for a clean building are still mutually agreed upon by other residents in the Standard. This time I was surprised by her overall story and how insensitive and disrespectful some residents at the Standard are.
In Conclusion, I believe my opportunity is still 100% there because all of the customers that I interviewed basically had the same responses to the level of cleanliness of the Standard. I think my new opportunity is more accurate than when I started because it addresses the feedback given by the customers or residents at the Standard. I think entrepreneurs should adapt their opportunities based on their customers feedback because at the end of the day, the entrepreneur is servicing his customers, which means he needs to give them what they want; therefore, an entrepreneur should adapt to their customer's needs.
Eli, I thought you chose a great opportunity! Obviously this situation clearly outlines and unmet need for a clean complex and judging by your interviews, it seems everyone feels the same. I agree in this situation that entrepreneurs should adapt their opportunities based on their customers feedback, however I don't necessarily see that fit for any situation. I believe it definitely depends on the opportunity that decides whether or not entrepreneurs should take into account their customers feedback. Well done!
ReplyDeleteHey Eli! I think you did a great job with your post and opportunity. This is a great idea that I think applies to a lot of people. You do a great job of outlining this issue and interviewing people who would find this issue relevant in their lives. The only suggestion I would make is to conduct more interviews before stating that your opportunity is 100% there. Overall, I think you did a fantastic job and you explained your opportunity very thoroughly.
