21A - Reading Reflection No.2

Book: Mindset by Carol Dweck

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The author, Carol S. Dweck, and her colleagues researched a simple belief that gives us
guidance and is part of every aspect of our life.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
In my opinion, the book enhanced my view of different mindsets. In the book, they discuss
two different mindsets: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is formed
around the belief that you are not subject to change. Your intelligence, personality, and
other traits are set and they will never change. On the other hand, a growth mindset is
one of learning and adaptiveness. A growth mindset is welcome to feedback and grows
from it.
These two mindsets link back to ENT3003 because an entrepreneur has the option to have
a fixed mindset or a growth mindset based on his environment and status.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would
that exercise involve?
Based on the book I read, my exercise would involve my participants learning whether they
have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset and tell them the pros and cons of both and let
them decide which mindset is more effective.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words,
what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

I learned that I have a mix between both mindsets because I believe some of my traits are not
subject to change, but there are also traits that do have the potential to be altered by feedback.

  1. Hey Eli, Although i did not read this book, i read "How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big", i think they are kind of similar in the way that they both talk about the way we should view ourselves. I like your exercise you came up with i think it ties in what the book talks about and i think it would be a great thing for college students to think about themselves.

  2. Eli, your post definitely gave me incentive to read this book. I would surely say I agree that I am a cross between a fixed and growth mindset. I would not be able to say it’s a good or a bad thing to have one or the other because I definitely think it depends on what exactly it’s about. I think can be positives and negatives to each mindset, but overall think it’s important to allow growth in the way someone views certain things. Well done!

  3. Hey Eli! Great job on your post. I also read this book and thought it was super interesting. I like how you connected it to what we learn in this class because entrepreneurs have to pick their mindset based on what business they are pursuing. I like your class assignment idea and think it would be really interesting to see which mindset people prefer. It is cool that you have a blend of both mindsets.
